# Scaleway

> Run the full Grovs stack on a Scaleway Instance, over SSH or with cloud-init before first boot.

## When to use

You want one Scaleway Instance running the whole stack.

## Prerequisites

The [shared VM prerequisites](https://docs.grovs.io/docs/self-hosting/clouds/cloud-vm#prerequisites): fresh Ubuntu 24.04 x86_64, 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 80 GB SSD, public IPv4, SSH key, domain. Scaleway bills you for the server, storage and traffic.

## 1. Prepare DNS and firewall

Configure the Instance's **security group** to allow inbound TCP 80/443 from the internet and TCP 22 only from your public IP. Allow outbound traffic.

## 2. Create the server

1. In your Scaleway project, create an x86 Instance with the plain Ubuntu 24.04 image and the resources above. Choose a persistent root volume.
2. Assign a public IPv4 address and add your SSH public key.
3. Start the Instance and connect with `ssh root@YOUR_SERVER_IP`. To use cloud-init instead, do not start it yet (see step 3).

See Scaleway's [Instance creation guide](https://www.scaleway.com/en/docs/instances/how-to/create-an-instance/).

## 3. Install Grovs

**Over SSH:** run the [shared installer](https://docs.grovs.io/docs/self-hosting/clouds/cloud-vm#over-ssh).

**With cloud-init:** for a fresh Instance that has not started yet, [generate the cloud-init file](https://docs.grovs.io/docs/self-hosting/clouds/cloud-vm#with-cloud-init-at-first-boot). With the Scaleway CLI configured for the correct project and zone, attach it **before the first boot**, replacing `SERVER_ID` with your Instance ID:

```bash
scw instance server update SERVER_ID cloud-init=@/tmp/grovs-cloud-init.yaml
scw instance server start SERVER_ID
```

See Scaleway's [cloud-init instructions](https://www.scaleway.com/en/docs/instances/how-to/use-cloud-init/).

Point the [DNS records](https://docs.grovs.io/docs/self-hosting/clouds/cloud-vm#1-prepare-dns-and-firewall) at the public IPv4 shown in the Scaleway console.

## 4. Deploy and verify

Follow the [shared verify steps](https://docs.grovs.io/docs/self-hosting/clouds/cloud-vm#4-deploy-and-verify).

## Upgrades

See the [shared VM upgrade notes](https://docs.grovs.io/docs/self-hosting/clouds/cloud-vm#upgrades).

## Gotchas

See the [shared gotchas](https://docs.grovs.io/docs/self-hosting/clouds/cloud-vm#gotchas).
